Millions of Americans have clinical severe obesity; making it the most common chronic disease in the United States. Obesity has significant effects on quality of life and, for some, surgery may be a solution.

St. Peter’s Health Partners is offering a free educational seminar, titled “Weight Loss Surgery: Take the First Step.” Free and open to the public, the program is for prospective patients, family members and loved ones, and others with concerns about weight loss.

The featured speaker is Matthew D. McDonald, DO, FACS, bariatric surgeon with Samaritan Hospital Bariatric and Metabolic Care, a practice of St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates.

The next seminar is being offered on Monday, February 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the SPHP Medical Offices – Brunswick Shopping Plaza, 720 Hoosick Rd. in Troy.

During the seminar, Dr. McDonald will discuss various aspects of weight loss surgery. He will explain who may be a candidate for surgery, how patients can lose up to 70 percent of excess weight, what types of surgical procedures are available, and the risks involved. Weight loss surgery is known to improve or resolve more than 30 obesity-related conditions. These conditions include Type 2 Diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, hypertension, and high cholesterol.
