Cardiology Associates of Schenectady Signs Letter of Intent to Join St. Peter’s Health Partners

St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates (SPHPMA) is pleased to announce that Cardiology Associates of Schenectady (CAS), PC, has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to join its rapidly growing medical group effective January 1, 2021.

Since its founding in 1990, CAS has been on the cutting edge of cardiovascular care for residents of Schenectady and Saratoga counties and the surrounding area. Composed of 25 cardiologists and 10 physician assistants, CAS currently offers a full range of cardiovascular testing, diagnostic, and treatment services for residents of Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Saratoga counties.

SPHPMA, a full affiliate corporation of St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP), is one of the Capital Region’s largest multi-specialty physician groups with more than 665 physicians and advanced practitioners, in more than 100 practice locations. The addition of CAS will enhance SPHPMA’s already strong cardiovascular physician practice presence in the Capital Region, which currently includes Albany Associates in Cardiology, with offices in Albany, Troy, Clifton Park and Glens Falls, and Saratoga Cardiology in Saratoga Springs. This new addition will expand to 11 the number of SPHPMA cardiology offices throughout the greater Capital Region.

“We are thrilled to have Cardiology Associates of Schenectady join St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates,” said William Kowal, M.D., chair of SPHPMA. “With their expertise and reputation in the community, this will certainly complement and grow our cardiovascular services we offer throughout the Capital Region.”

“This partnership will allow us to strengthen and grow all of our cardiac programs in their own communities in a competitive recruiting environment,” said Michael Holmes, M.D., president of CAS. “We are excited to leverage the strength and expertise of a larger organization to provide exceptional care to all of our patients throughout the greater Capital Region.”

Throughout the next few months, SPHPMA and CAS will work together to ensure a smooth transition and welcome to the physician practice. Current patients of CAS will still have the option to continue to receive care at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam, and Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville.

By joining SPHPMA, CAS will be expanding its ability to provide greater access to cardiac care in the community. A plan is underway to launch walk-in clinics at several locations, where patients with non-life-threatening symptoms can be seen that same day, similar to an urgent care setting. Patients with chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath or rapid heart rate would be evaluated, and board-certified cardiologists would work with referring physicians to develop a plan for treatment that is suited to meet the patient’s individual needs.

This type of care is in full alignment with CAS’ long-standing involvement and leadership in community-based population health management efforts, in association with the work of the Innovative Health Alliance of NY (IHANY) and the Alliance for Better Health. Both organizations work with networks of providers to redesign care delivery aimed at better health at a lower cost.
