Dr. William Kowal named Chief Medical Officer for SPHPMA

St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates (SPHPMA) is pleased to announce that William Kowal, MD, FACP has been named Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates.

Dr. Kowal joined SPHPMA in 2013 as an internist after his legacy organization, Prime Care Physicians, merged with the medical group. He has practiced medicine in the Capital Region for more than 20 years.

As CMO, Dr. Kowal will serve as the physician leader on the SPHPMA senior leadership team supporting the medical group as a key driver in SPHP’s transition into a regional, fully integrated healthcare system. He will work to reinforce an organizational culture based on transparency, and collaboratively encourage a high level of engagement from providers to meet clinical and operational milestones centered on quality and financial performance.

Dr. Kowal has consistently taken on increasingly more demanding leadership roles within SPHPMA and The Innovative Health Alliance of New York, LLC (IHANY), the Capital Region’s first Clinically Integrated Network (CIN). He has chaired several committees including the executive, compensation, clinical integration & quality, and primary care committees. Most recently, Dr. Kowal has served as chair of the SPHPMA board of trustees, and was named secretary for the IHANY Board of Directors for 2021.

Dr. Kowal is board certified in internal medicine and received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He completed his internship and residency at Baystate Medical Center (Tufts).
