The Butt Stops Here, St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP)’s award-winning tobacco cessation program, was featured on WRGB/CBS 6’s Primetime Living special. The program profiles services and resources designed to help older adults stay active, healthy, and plan for their future.
Erin Sinisgalli, director of Community Health Programs at SPHP, spoke about how The Butt Stops Here helps smokers kick the habit, and how quitting can drastically improve your health.
First of all, you can quit smoking at any age. And what we know is when people quit smoking, they immediately have positive health effects. So just within 20 minutes of your last cigarette, your blood pressure’s going to go down. Your heart rate’s going to go down. And over time, and this could be an hour, it could be 24 hours all the way up to 10, 15 years, you can reduce the health effects that cigarettes have had on your body to that of a non-smoker. So it’s never too late to quit because you will feel better within days, weeks, and months as time goes on.
