WTEN: Alcohol Awareness Month

In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, Angad Madan, M.D., medical director for St. Peter’s Addiction Recovery Center (SPARC), discussed alcohol use disorder during an appearance on WTEN/News10’s Women’s Health Wednesday. He talked about alcohol’s impact on women, as well as how to identify if someone has a drinking problem.

From the interview:

29 million Americans suffer with AUD according to national surveys. AUD Is a chronic medical disease or brain disorder characterized by an impaired ability to stop drinking alcohol or to control alcohol use, despite the adverse social and occupational effects and the risk of health consequences.

Although the number of men with alcohol use disorder exceeds the number of women with this disease, research indicates that this gap may be narrowing, as alcohol use is increasing for women but not for men – according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Dr. Angad Madan, medical director of St. Peter’s Addiction Recovery Center (SPARC), tells NEWS10 the prevalence of alcohol use disorder is high in the patient population at SPARC. At least 50% of patients seen in various levels of care at SPARC including in the detox unit, rehab areas, and outpatient sites are patients with alcohol use disorder, as their primary substance use disorder.
