WTEN: Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Steven Gurien, M.D., of Capital District Colon & Rectal Surgery Associates, appeared on WTEN/News10 to highlight the importance of getting screened for colorectal cancer.

From the interview:

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. While it is the second deadliest form of cancer in this country, it is highly preventable with screening. And yet, more people in younger age groups, are being diagnosed before the recommended, screening age.

That’s why Dr. Steven Gurien, of Capital District Colon & Rectal Associates says people need to be proactive.

It is imperative that you know your family history first and foremost. While the current screening age is 45, you can be screened earlier if there is a family history of polyps or cancer.

Also, it is important to reduce your risk factors by cutting down on alcohol, avoiding processed meat, not smoking, and eating a high fiber and low fat diet. Other risk factors include obesity and inflammatory bowel disease.
