WTEN: Woman Shares Colon Cancer Battle after Sister Receives Same Diagnosis

Dr. Joanne Favuzza, of Capital District Colon & Rectal Surgery Associates, talks about the growing number of younger adults being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, during an interview on WTEN/News10.

From the report:

“So, colorectal cancer is increasing in younger patients, especially in the last two decades,” Dr. Joanne Favuzza with St. Peter’s Health said.

While many things can contribute to cancer like alcohol consumption, smoking and environmental factors, doctors have not pinpointed the reason for an increase in younger patients.

It’s a trend that’s become concerning for Dr. Favuzza, especially since colon cancer screening starts at 45. “A lot of younger patients have their symptoms ignored,” she explained.

WTEN’s report included an interview with a Capital Region woman who was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the age of 26. Her older sister was also diagnosed with the disease at the age of 41.
