September is Newborn Screening Awareness Month

Four million babies are born in the United States every year. While most babies are healthy, some are born with serious but treatable medical conditions. Babies with these conditions often appear healthy at birth. Newborn screenings help to identify these disorders early. New York State’s Newborn Screening Program covers more than 40 conditions. The screening uses only a few drops of blood from the baby’s heel to test for sickle cell anemia, cystic fibrosis, Krabbe disease, and many other disorders. Early detection and diagnosis of these disorders leads to early treatment and better health outcomes. In addition, a hearing exam is performed to identify any congenital hearing loss and a non-invasive pulse oximetry screening is conducted to identify critical congential heart defects. Newborn screening results are not a diagnosis, but they let health care providers and parents know that more testing is needed. Cardiology Associates of Schenectady Signs Letter of Intent to Join St. Peter’s Health Partners

St. Peter’s Health Partners Medical Associates (SPHPMA) is pleased to announce that Cardiology Associates of Schenectady (CAS), PC, has signed a letter of intent (LOI) to join its rapidly growing medical group effective January 1, 2021. Since its founding in 1990, CAS has been on the cutting edge of cardiovascular care for residents of Schenectady and Saratoga counties and the surrounding area. Composed of 25 cardiologists and 10 physician assistants, CAS currently offers a full range of cardiovascular testing, diagnostic, and treatment services for residents of Schenectady, Montgomery, Fulton and Saratoga counties. SPHPMA, a full affiliate corporation of St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP), is one of the Capital Region’s largest multi-specialty physician groups with more than 665 physicians and advanced practitioners, in more than 100 practice locations. The addition of CAS will enhance SPHPMA’s already strong cardiovascular physician practice presence in the Capital Region, which currently includes Albany Associates in Cardiology, with offices in Albany, Troy, Clifton Park and Glens Falls, and Saratoga Cardiology in Saratoga Springs.
