WNYT: St. Peter’s Offers Groundbreaking Procedure to Prevent Limb Amputations

Vascular surgeons Dr. William Raible and Dr. Yaron Sternbach of St. Peter’s Vascular Associates, were interviewed by WNYT about a first-of-its-kind treatment in the Capital Region for severe peripheral arterial disease.

The treatment, called LimFlow from Inari Medical, is an off-the-shelf endovascular therapy that helps restore blood flow in cases of chronic limb-threatening ischemia and avoid amputation.

From the report:

St. Peter’s is currently the only hospital in the Capital Region offering LimFlow, and only a handful of hospitals nationwide provide the procedure. Surgeons say it has the potential not only to save limbs but also to reduce long-term health costs.

“The upside is patients get to maintain their quality of life and level of function, which is huge,” said Dr. Sternbach, Chief of Vascular Surgery at St. Peter’s. “There’s also a tremendous cost savings, both to the patient and the healthcare system as a whole.”

Dr. Raible added that for patients like Berkery, avoiding a second amputation can be life-changing.
“Joe was again looking at a double amputation, which in an older person can mean being wheelchair- or bed-bound for life. It’s very challenging to rehabilitate from one amputation, let alone two. This procedure helps change that outlook.”
