Samaritan Hospital Sets 9th Annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” Fundraiser Against Sexual Assault & Gender Crimes

The Sexual Assault & Crime Victims Assistance Program for Rensselaer County at Samaritan Hospital, in observance of April as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month, will host its 9th annual “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes®,” a community march against rape and sexual violence, Saturday, Apr. 30, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. (registration/check-in at 11 a.m., walk at noon), at Riverfront Park, Troy. Dan Bazile, reporter and anchor of Weekend Today, WNYT NewsChannel 13, will serve as the emcee, along with WYJB 95.5 FM personalities Bill Fox and Chad O’Hara. Albany Broadcasting and B-95.5 FM are the media sponsors. The first-of-its-kind community march invites the public – especially challenging men to show support for victims by literally walking a mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. Samaritan Hospital Partners With Law Enforcement & Community Organizations To Target Child Abuse

The Sexual Assault and Crime Victims Assistance Program for Rensselaer County (SACVAP) at Samaritan Hospital – in partnership with a host of area police and law enforcement agencies, county services agencies, and community organizations – today unveiled “Enough Abuse Rensselaer County,” a new educational campaign aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. The campaign is the first-of-its-kind in the greater Capital Region. According to the American Medical Association, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men report having been sexually abused in childhood, almost always by someone they know, trust, or love. It is estimated there are 39 million Americans living today who have been victims of child sexual abuse, 13 million of whom are still children. “Child sexual abuse is a public health problem,” said Lindsey Crusan, director of the SACVAP at Samaritan Hospital. “All of the partnering agencies here today recognize that by coming together and taking a stand, we can send the strongest message yet that child sexual abuse is not acceptable in our community. Samaritan Hospital & B95.5 FM Honored by New York State Broadcasters Association

Samaritan Hospital and Albany Broadcasting radio station WYJB 95.5 FM were recognized recently by the New York State Broadcasters Association with a “Serving New York Award” for their partnership on the annual “Walk A Mile In Her Shoes” event. Walk A Mile is an annual community march held in April in observance of National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The event raises funds and awareness against rape and sexual violence. Walkers, especially men, are challenged to literally walk a mile in women’s high-heeled shoes in support of what victims go through. About 500 walkers of all ages turn out to support the event, raising tens of thousands of dollars to benefit outreach and prevention programs.
