St. Peter’s Recognized as a ‘Best Hospital for Maternity Care’ by U.S. News

St. Peter’s Hospital, an affiliate of St. Peter’s Health Partners (SPHP), has been recognized as a Best Hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy) by U.S. News & World Report. St. Peter’s is the only hospital in the Capital Region to receive the designation.

To be recognized among the Best Hospitals for Maternity, hospitals had to excel on multiple quality metrics important to expectant families including:

  • Complication rates
  • C-sections
  • Whether births were scheduled too early in pregnancy
  • How successfully the hospital supported breastfeeding

St. Peter’s Hospital earned a “High Performing” rating, the highest rating U.S. News awards for that type of care. Only one-third of the hospitals evaluated by U.S. News for maternity care earned the “High Performing” rating.

“I am so very proud of our amazing maternity services team, because it is their hard work, expertise, and a commitment to high quality care and patient safety that allowed us to earn this prestigious recognition from U.S. News & World Report,” said Sandra Michael, BSN, SNT, MST, CLC, CBC, RN-BC, director for Women’s & Children’s Services, Acute Care, at SPHP. “This distinction is the latest honor recognizing St. Peter’s Hospital for its outstanding performance in caring for women and their newborns. This culture of excellence is a direct reflection of the dedication, compassion, and clinical skill of our talented physicians, nurses, and colleagues.”

“All families deserve to be informed on how hospitals perform on key indicators of quality, which is why U.S. News has compiled and published a trove of maternal health data from hospitals across the country,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News & World Report. “The hospitals we’ve recognized as High Performing meet a high standard in caring for patients with uncomplicated pregnancies.”

This is the first time U.S. News has published a list of Best Hospitals for Maternity. The evaluation looks at hospital data relating to only uncomplicated pregnancies, not high-risk pregnancies. Participating hospitals responded to a survey from the U.S. News health analysis team in spring of 2021 which reflects data from 2019. Participation was voluntary.

U.S. News plans to update Best Hospitals for Maternity in summer of 2022, to coincide with the release of the 2022-23 Best Hospitals for Procedures & Conditions ratings. Last year, St. Peter’s Health Partners’ three hospitals – St. Peter’s Hospital, Samaritan Hospital, and Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital – were each been recognized as a Best Hospital for 2021-22 by U.S. News & World Report.

“The providers, nurses and staff at The Women’s & Children’s Center at St. Peter’s Hospital are dedicated to providing highly skilled and compassionate care to our patients,” said Mike Finegan, president of acute care for St. Peter’s Health Partners. “This latest accolade from U.S. News is a reflection of their immense talent and commitment to attaining the highest standards in patient care. We are exceptionally proud of our clinical teams.”
